Crooked River State Park - St. Mary's, Georgia
I had been to St. Mary's a couple of times but only to visit the Submarine Museum. We had tried to stay at the State Park but could not find a good time. Well, we finally found the time to come over to St. Mary's and see all there was to offer. We also visited Cumberland Island National Seashore as well as the Submarine Museum again! The park is very easy to get to and the sites are all very large; capable of holding a 50ft unit. Power, cable, and water are offered and only 3 sites have full hookups...but those are for the hosts. There are essentially two loops: The left loop is open but has good tree cover and a new comfort station. The right loop is more secluded and very private but at the cost of an older comfort station. There are ample pull-thrus as well as back in sites. The pads are very level with a fire ring and some have elevated grills as well. We figured that waiting until October to visit would be good because the "No-seeums" should not be too bad...WRONG!! We could not have the screen doors and vents open because they flew right thru the screen holes and chased us outside. However, I must say that Deep Woods Off kept them off of me and I didn't have to smell like Avon Skin-so-Soft.
If you do get the chance I must recommend the guided night tours among the many trails in the park...the rangers are VERY knowledgeable and helpful. The place is teaming with animals of all sorts. During our stay we made friends with an Armadillo, 3 Deer, Orb Spiders, and Flying Teeth.
The Park Office stays open until 10pm (which is absolutely unheard of in other parks) and has a key-coded gate that you can still access after the 10pm closure.

Columbus Day Weekend 2008 - Wet and Welts!!!
Our adventure begins with a wonderful trip and easy to find State Park. There were plenty of staff to help us check-in and direct us to the campground. All of sites were the same size so we could pick any one that was not occupied. We chose site 54 as it was a pull-thru with easy access to the comfort station if needed. We had wonderful privacy from our neighbors from the use of Palmetto Trees. The Sand Fleas attacked first, but was thwarted off with the use of Deep Woods Off. Set-up was a breeze and everyone pitched in to help. I assume that because we were so close to Florida, it seemed to rain off and on during the whole stay. The day we packed up to leave it poured and consequentially we could not dump the sanitary tanks because the dump station was underwater!
