Fort Wilderness, Disney World - Orlando, Florida

We were pleasantly surprised by this experience.  I mean camping in Disney World?  Well, as you can tell by the pictures above, it is very clean and you still get the feeling of being isolated from your neighbor.  The comfort station is clean enough you can eat off the floor if you were so inclined!  There are buses that will take you to any park you want to go to...you have all of the amenities of staying in one of the other Disney Hotel Resorts but you get to enjoy your own bed.  Each night there is a campfire and movie with some Disney characters.  Speaking of campfires...you will not be allowed to have any at your site.  No open flames except to cook by...not even citronella candles for the bugs.  However, I must admit that I, who normally will get eaten alive by mosquitoes, never got bitten by any during my stay.  What is amazing is that you will still see wildlife walking all over the park at night.  Don't be surprised when a friendly armadillo or rabbit stops by your camper to say hello.

A couple of hints to maximize your camping experience...just because there is not a cloud in the sky, do yourself a favor and roll up your awning before you leave.  It will rain and it WILL be around 3pm.  I remember that from when I was stationed in Orlando, it will rain every day.  Normally only a 15 - 30 minute shower.  Just be prepared

Watch out for the golf carts.  You may bring your own or rent them from the Park Staff.  Have fun trying to explain to your 15 year old why he can't drive the cart on his own but there are even younger kids driving them all over the place.  I don't make the rules, I just try to enforce them as they pertain to MY children. (UPDATE...little silent electric scooters are the rage now and one squirrel never heard the kid coming...in our own loop.)

Do try to eat one meal at the Trails End.  GOOD FOOD is an understatement.  As with anything Disney...bring lots of money but well worth every penny!

We plan on going back very soon...as a matter of fact March of 08 we will be going down there.  You're never too old for Mickey and his gang! (UPDATE...we have updated our adventure, of coarse it was another great time!)

Fort Wilderness, Disney World - Orlando, Florida

March/April 2008

We found a new way into Disney World via a new toll road ($2) with little to no traffic.  It is via 429s and get off at Western Way (Google won't show you this way but the Satellite Picture will).  We pulled in a little early and had to wait in a holding area until our site was ready...no problem as we had a chance to eat lunch before setting up.  The place was packed!

We visited many places during this stay.  Every other day was a new park and we used the Disney World Resort Transportation to visit some of the other resorts.  Click the links below to see pictures of our adventures!

Sea World 2008

This was our first trip to Sea World and it was a fantastic experience.  Sad to think that I was stationed at NTC Orlando for a year and never took the effort to come see the place from the inside!

Magic Kingdom 2008

We divided this adventure a little bit...we hit everything we wanted to see and ride during the first part of the day and came back later that night for the electric parade and fireworks.  (Thus the advantage of staying on a Disney Resort!)

Epcot 2008

We went all over the place and honestly wore ourselves out trying to see everything!  Luckily a thunderstorm came up and encouraged us to call it a day and go back to the campground before we collapsed.  Do yourself a favor and plan for at least 2 days to completely see Epcot.
