Georgia Veteran's State Park - Cordele, Georgia
Georgia Vets offers 77 campsites in two loops. There is a waterfront loop composing premium sites that allow you to "park" your boat on your doorstep. The other loop is very near the lake (easily walked to) and has a large play area in the center. Lake Blackshear is a large lake that will allow you to fish and/or ski if you so desire and are equipped. After the flood of 1994 damaged the dam, many stumps were able to be removed with the lowered lake level. Levels are now back to normal and the game fish are back as well as the alligators...so keep an eye on your children and small pets. The camp loops are gated at all times to keep the "day use" patrons from wandering thru the campground so you have to have a code to open the gate. Ensure that you are back before 10 pm as the gate will be locked and you have to park at the boat ramps and walk to your campsite. The sites are level and easy to get into and out of. The park offers a lot to do and see. It has a regular golf course and a Frisbee golf course as well. On the weekends, you can go watch as radio controlled planes buzz the area from the large flying field or go look at the real planes and tanks/ Years ago, okay 30 years, they used to let you crawl on and in the tanks and is one of my favorite childhood memories of Lake Blackshear. Now they have added a lot more items but you cannot crawl on them anymore; probably due to our litigious society. We love this park because we are only an hour and fifteen minutes from our house and still feel we can get away. Oh, and you have to get the world famous watermelon from the farmer's market!
UPDATE**During this last trip (July 2008) we stayed for the first time in the other loop. The sites were spaced apart nicely but some are not very well marked with crush and run. Also something we discovered since we were some distance from the Lake...on this particular 4th of July weekend...there is NO breeze. In other words it was HOT! Make sure you pack a fan for some air movement. On a good note, it was a nice location to watch the annual fireworks show over the lake. The park will open the back access gate for traffic congestion relief and it was nice to not have to deal with the crowds.**
Low and Behold, yes, a pop up was the direction we wanted to go. So we purchased "The Moose", rebuilt her and commenced camping!

We sold The Moose to another family that will love her and upgraded to a beautiful travel trailer that has been dubbed "The Bandit". This was her maiden voyage...which we felt it was appropriate to take "The Bandit" to Ga. Vets since we took "The Moose" here on her maiden voyage.

"Family Reunion"
Georgia Veteran's State Park - Cordele, Georgia
Instead of normally meeting during the Christmas holidays for a family reunion, we elected to meet up during the summer when most everyone is not too busy and the weather wasn't too cold...okay, now it is HOT! It was a grand time until the severe thunderstorm sirens went off! The City of Cordele picked a bad time to test the sirens since there really was some severe lightening in the area but they were only testing!
