Unicoi State Park - Helen, Georgia
Unicoi SP has many amenities to offer. They have 82 campsites that are fairly easy to get to. One thing to keep in mind is that this park is old and heavily treed. Thus the sites can take some effort to get into depending on the size of your unit. We have stayed at the lodge many years ago and loved it. Our campsite on this trip was good and large enough for two families to camp on. I don't remember too much that was spectacular as it rained the whole weekend. The one day the rain stayed away, we were sitting by the campfire enjoying ourselves and we were surprised by an unwanted visitor that dropped out from the trees. Let me prelude this with the fact that my wife has an adamant fear of arachnids...so who do you think this fellow lands on? I think her scream is still echoing in the Appalachian Mountains to this day! Okay, the truth is that the spider dropped down from the trees in front of one of our friends and he swatted the guy straight at my wife! Unicoi is another good place to be centrally located to other places in the mountains. Helen, Ga. is right down the highway and there is access to a very scenic highway to the north. You can also access the trail to Anna Ruby Falls and hike to a very beautiful falls. Or do like we did and drive there. I don't think you can go wrong by going to a State Park in the North Georgia mountains...or at least that is our opinion and we are sticking to it.
