Vogel State Park - Blairsville, Georgia

What can we say about Vogel SP?  It has 103 campsites, it is very heavily treed, it is very beautiful, and it is by far the best state park we have visited!  It has been ranked in the top ten state parks in the whole United States and I believe it!  We have been there a number times and each time is very pleasant.  Our first trip was in October in a tent...our eggs froze.  The next trip it rained.  I mentioned the area is so heavily treed that the rain started and we didn't feel the water for 30 minutes!  Of coarse, when the rain stopped, it was quite a while until it stopped dripping and things began to dry out.  It can be high noon and you still need flash photography to take pictures.  Take a look at our pictures below and you will see how things are for real.

The sites are large enough for some privacy and there is a specific popup and tent loop.  Don't try to negotiate this loop pulling your TT because of a tight turn going up hill.  Really you shouldn't need to go down that way to begin with.  There are two streams that run through the CG so you get to go to sleep to the sound of trickling water.  The comfort stations are kept clean and every time we have been there, we never had a problem seeing CG hosts.  The sites are fairly level and a number of them have been recently upgraded with fresh gravel and border timber.  The day use area is absolutely picturesque.  I have never seen such a beautiful lake.  You can walk all around the lake, take a paddle boat ride, swim, fish, play putt-putt, or hike down to the park's own falls.  This park was built by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) to help preserve the land and provide jobs during the depression.  You must visit the CCC Museum by the Lake Pavilion.

The drive to the park is an adventure if you have never driven in the mountains.  Our advise is to NOT get in a hurry and stay in a lower gear.  Just when you think you can shift out of 3rd...another sharp curve will cause you to test your TV and TT brakes.  Keep an eye on your engine and transmission temps.  You will find many motorcyclist all over the roads because of the hair-pin turns and curves.  Just take your time and let the passengers enjoy the scenery; "Arrive alive" is my motto!  If you are coming from the south, when you pass the runaway truck ramp, you are very close to the park entrance.  It will be on your left as you head down hill.  Coming from the north is not too bad.  The entrance drive to the Visitors Center is narrow and twisty but quite easy to navigate.

The park is located close to Brass-town Bald - the highest point in Georgia.  A must see that is within 10 miles of the park.  De Soto Falls is close by to the south that is a wonderful hike to get to.  To the north of the park is a little village that has a wonderful restaurant, shopping, and killer Kettle Korn!  I can use one word to summarize Vogel State Park....AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Upon successful completion of camping in a tent under opposite and extreme conditions, we took the next logical step and rented a pop up camper to determine if that was the direction we wanted to go.
